Sacrificed for Spectacle

The International Olympic Committee, French health officials, together with most of the media have failed our athletes by remaining silent on the life‑changing consequences of Covid.
"Covid only impacts old or unhealthy people"

The 20 elite athletes reported below are young and fit. Everyone is vulnerable to the disease.

"This is the first post-pandemic Olympic Games"

We’re still in a pandemic, and there is up to 20 times more virus around than reported.

"Hand sanitiser stops covid spreading"

The virus spreads like smoke, and it takes just seconds to breathe in enough to get infected.

"Covid is a respiratory illness like a cold or the flu"

It’s a disease that harms every organ and the immune system, causing brain damage, heart attacks and more.

"Athlete health and safety is the utmost priority"

With Covid allowed to spread throughout the Games, athletes are expected to risk infection and its consequences.

"Repeated Covid infections are inevitable"

We can take action now to protect ourselves, while we wait for governments to address Covid’s tsunami of disability.

*This list is incomplete. We're only including athletes who've been named and already received extensive media coverage. Our objective is to highlight the way in which elite athletes are being failed by a lack of resolve to meet the unique challenges of this virus. And in that, they are the same as the rest of us: badly let down.
Are we missing an important update?

Her initial infection seemed like a “mild cold”, but it soon developed into severe long Covid and she “totally lost the ability to function”.

Dr Bronwyn King

“Leaving athletes and coaches to navigate these tricky decisions themselves isn’t fair – but there has been a disappointing lack of leadership on this issue.”

“It’s brilliant when we see athletes modelling smart behaviour – like the Australian swimmers wearing masks on planes and at the airport”

“I think I’m immune to it for a while now”

An immune response to one Covid-19 variant does not prevent you getting infected with another variant. Reinfection with a new or different variant can occur soon after any Covid-19 infection. In addition, the virus can cause immune dysregulation, making your immune system weaker.
